Abstract
“This report details the main findings of the sixth wave of a large-scale consumer tracking study into the extent of online copyright infringement, as well as wider digital behaviours and attitudes, among people aged 12+ in the UK. The study was commissioned and financially supported by the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO). It is the sixth in a series of research to generate benchmarks and time series relevant to the access and use of copyright material online. It also outlines the background to the research and a detailed description of the methodology employed”
Main Results of the Study
Illegal User access to digitally provided music, film, tv programme, books, video games, and computer software. The study examines the scope of illegal access, its consequences for the creator’s remuneration and incentives to access content illegally. The study finds that 59% of UK internet users over the age of 12 consumed at minimum one of the content types during the study whereby music had the highest access rate at 37%. 57% paid for accessing content. The authors estimate the 15% of content consumption happened illegally and consumers under 35 form 68% of illegal accesses. “The most commonly cited reasons for infringing were because it is free (49%), convenient (45%) and quick (42%).”
